I recently had a few free hours at the end of the day while out in Seattle, so I took a drive east into the mountains. Here’s the first photo in a mini-series centered around beautiful Index, Washington. Amtrak runs on this line, and I saw it fly past while I was at a crossing.

At the end of March, I had a chance to visit Rantoul, Illinois. I hadn’t been there in nearly 30 years, back when the Air Force base there was still operating. I had been there twice, both when I was a young Boy Scout on an overnight “lock in” at the base. Today, parts of the base are still there, of course, including the massive hangar that once served as a training ground for Air Force flight crews.
